Origin of volleyball
In 1895 William G Morgan, from Holyoke, Massachusetts (USA), a YMCA director, created a new game called Mintonette. He was seeking a new game to be played indoors and by teams rather than individual players. He enjoyed tennis and so the new game adopted characteristics of it such as a net and the serve from outside of the court.
Basketball, was also catching on in the area, it was invented just ten miles away in Springfield, Mass., only four years prior. Mintonette was designed to be an indoor sport less rough than basketball for older members of the YMCA, while still requiring a level of athleticism.
